When the going gets tough, Dakota Johnson can count on boyfriend Chris Martin to put her first.
The “Fifty Shades of Grey” actress, who’s been vocal about her history of depression, opened up about how the Coldplay singer recently helped support her during an appearance at the Hope for Depression Research Foundation’s (HDRF) 17th annual luncheon earlier this month.
"A few weeks ago, I was having a low day," said Johnson at the event, according to Hello! magazine and InStyle. "And my partner said to me, 'Are you really struggling?' and I said, 'No?'"
Although Johnson attempted to downplay her mental wellness, she said Martin could sense something was wrong.
"He said, 'Baby, you are wearing a cats T-shirt.' As in 'Cats' the music," Johnson said. "So, it turns out, I really was struggling. But that moment lifted me up and pulled me out of it."
Johnson was honored with the HOPE Award for Depression Advocacy for her candor on living with depression and anxiety, according to the foundation’s official website.
“Removing the stigma of anxiety and depressive disorders and the means to help them is essential,” Johnson said during her acceptance speech, per HDRF. “We are in too much trouble as a human race to feel further isolated by the brain chemistry and complexities of the mind that we are born with, or the life experiences that we may not have chosen given the state of the world.
"If we help each other understand that caring for our mental health is essential, perhaps that will turn practicing self-love and self-compassion into a vital part of living.”
Johnson and Martin first sparked romance rumors back in October 2017 when the pair was spotted dining at a sushi restaurant, according to People magazine. In October 2021, Martin gave a sweet shoutout to Johnson when he dedicated the Coldplay song “My Universe” to her during a London concert.
